According to Chinese government officials, the world's largest solar farm is being built on the Tibetan plateau to help China achieve carbon neutrality. The panels have been installed faster than anywhere else in the world and will cover an area the size of Chicago: 235 square miles (610 square kilometers).
Experts say a sharper reduction would be needed since China is the world's biggest emitter of greenhouse gases, but China's rapid expansion in solar energy is beginning to yield environmental dividends: a new study shows the country’s carbon emissions dropped by 1% in the first half of 2025 compared to the previous year, continuing a positive downward trend that began in March 2024.
Solar power is the fastest-growing renewable energy source in the world. It's also considered a clean source of energy, as it produces no climate-warming greenhouse gas emissions during its operation. The use of solar power is increasing exponentially as more nations harness the power of the sun. Indeed, according to the World Bank, off-grid solar power has the potential to bring electricity to nearly 400 million people worldwide for the first time by 2030.
