The United Nations declared September 26 to be the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons. Despite the international body’s ambition to end the stain of nuclear weaponry, they remain a fixture of modern warfare. Annual spending on nuclear arms is the highest it's ever been throughout the world, yet its last and only use was the harrowing attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, when the United States hurled atomic bombs over the Japanese cities, murdering over 250,000 and maiming tens of thousands.
