It's impossible to talk about surf movies without talking about 'Gidget'. Based on the novel 'Gidget, the Little Girl with Big Ideas' by Frederick Kohner, the film tells the story of a Malibu girl who isn't content to just sit and watch the boys surf.

The success of the first movie spawned a successful sequel, which saw Deborah Walley take on the title role. The surfing action switches to Hawaii, where Gidget is busy riding waves after a lovers' tiff with her surfer boyfriend, Jeff "Moondoggie" Matthews. It's a fun frolic of a movie with some seriously good surf scenes.

An altogether darker surf movie, 'The Shallows' is a horror story based out at sea, with a great white shark providing the scares.
