Girona - The province of Girona is found in the northeast of Spain, close to France. It's in Catalonia, so keep in mind that they speak Catalan there.

Girona city - The city is the capital of the province and was built where the rivers Ter, Onyar, Galligants, and Güell come together. It has an ancient history and was founded as far back as 79 BCE.

Girona Cathedral -

The city cathedral is a wonderful mishmash of different architectural styles. It is mainly Gothic, but there are also Romanesque and Arabic features. The Plaça da la Catedral is always filled with life, and in many ways is the heart of the city.

The Jewish Quarter (El Call) - Before the Catholics expelled the Jews in the 15th century, Girona was a very important place for Kabbalah scholars. Owing to its past of poets and philosophers, this area now exudes a sense of intellectual mystery.

Museum of Jewish History - If you are in the Jewish Quarter, then there is no better place to learn about its history than the Jewish History Museum. It showcases manuscripts they found during the excavation of the synagogue. You can see the synagogue itself as well.

Fires de Sant Narcís - In the last week of October, this fun festival takes place. Among general activities, the most jaw-dropping feature is the castellers, aka human towers.

Church of St. Felix -

This strangely shaped church is both Gothic and Romanesque. It is mostly worth a visit because of its eerie early-Christian sarcophagi inside. You will also find the brilliant tomb of San Narciso from the Middle Ages.

Unfortunately you can’t go for a dip here during the hot summer, but it sure is a marvel to look at. Each room has a different pampering purpose.

Rambla de la Llibertat - Like all good Catalonian cities, Girona city has a wonderful main street. When you have been prancing around the old town with its narrow streets, the Rambla de Llibertat comes as a spacial and culinary relief.

Plaça de la Independencia - When the French invaded Girona in 1809, many inhabitants fervently defended the city. The arches of this beautiful square are dedicated to those civilian soldiers.

MAC Girona -

The Archaeology Museum of Catalonia (MAC) in Girona is one of five venues of the Archaeology Museum of Catalonia. The museum is housed in a fantastic restored Benedictine monastery called Sant Pere de Galligants. The exhibitions are full of great details covering the most interesting archaeological finds from the Visigoths, Romans, and Greeks.

Cinema Museum Girona - It may not immediately catch your eye, but Girona's cinema museum is absolutely worth a visit. It teaches visitors about the evolution of the camera and the inventors behind them.

Architecture - If you are walking along the Onyar river, you are sure to see modernist and noucentrist architecture. The buildings shine bright with orange and yellow. There are many walking tours on offer to guide you through the architectural work of Rafael Masó.

For 10 days in May, all the people of the city decorate their houses with flowers. There are also lots of fiestas and fun activities for all the family to take part in.

Platja de Treumal - This protected area is one of the easiest beaches to get to. There is a botanical garden of cacti nearby to entertain you, and crystal blue water for a soak. In the summer, you can also hire beach beds and park nearby.

Platja de Santa Cristina - You may be familiar with the work of artist Joaquín Sorolla (1863-1923). He painted this beach with thick strokes of color to convey the sheer tranquility and beauty of the spot.

Platja del Canadell - If you are looking for somewhere a little more upmarket, this is where all the fancy Catalans go. It's a charming fishing village that has been preserved from the claws of industrial tourism.

Cap de Creus National Park - If you fancy a break from the city to see some real rugged Mediterranean coast, here is the place to go. Cap de Creus National Park is near the town of Figueres and offers breathtaking deep blue sea views and natural rock formations.

Vila Vella, Tossa de Mar - The castle walls are built almost directly on the beach in this quaint medieval town. It is the only fortified town on the Catalan coast and is the perfect place for a few days of quiet relaxation.

Sculpture park - This is no ordinary sculpture park. The Jardíns de Cap Roig are filled with tropical plants and terraces that look out over the Mediterranean. There are lots of different gardens you can amble through on a cool summer’s evening.

Salvador Dalí House Museum - The famous Salvador Dalí (1904-1989) converted a fisherman’s hut with his wife, Gala (1894-1982), into a winding surrealist paradise. We recommend getting a tour guide and booking in advance.

Dalí Theatre-Museum - Not only is this theater designed by Salvador Dalí, but he is also buried in a crypt beneath the stage! Some of his best works are housed in the museum.

Figueres - If you are loco for more Dalí, then hang around in the town of Figueres, his birthplace. It's filled with museums dedicated to the artist and also has a whole museum about toys, the Museu del Joguets.

Road trip - The Girona province contains part of the Pyrenees mountain range. Owing to this, the climate is perfect for agriculture, making the fields a sight to behold. Rent a convertible and have a drive-through on a sunny day to truly experience the scenery.

Scuba diving - The Costa Brava is extremely popular for scuba diving and snorkeling, owing to its diverse underwater topography. You'll see underwater mountains, wrecks, and lots of funky fish.

Vall de Núria - Hiking fanatics should mosey on up to the Vall de Núria, part of the Girona Pyrenees. There are impressive nature trails and even skiing in the winter.
