Geology

Indonesia’s Mount Semeru, the highest volcano on Java, erupted on November 19, sending columns of ash into the sky and covering nearby villages. The eruption produced clouds of hot ash, gas, and volcanic debris that surged up to 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) down the slopes, while a dense cloud rose 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) above the crater, according to Indonesia’s Geology Agency.

More than 300 residents from the hardest-hit villages in Lumajang district were evacuated to government shelters as officials expanded the exclusion zone to 8 kilometers (5 miles) from the crater. No casualties have been reported.
