From the mid-2000s onwards, we've seen a rapidly growing number of gay and lesbian couples on TV. There's still a long way to go, but now there are enough couples (past and present) around that fans can afford to be picky and choose their favorites.
The British Netflix series 'Heartstopper,' based on a series of books by the same name from Alice Oseman, was a runaway success when the first season dropped in 2022. The heartwarming show portrays the struggles and joy of first love, discovering your sexual identity, and coming out while navigating life at school. It centers around Charlie, an openly gay teen, and his relationship with Nick, a popular rugby player who's privately struggling with his sexuality. The queer joy it captures as they fall in love, along with the challenges they face, won the show critical acclaim and multiple awards at the Children's and Family Emmy Awards. The hotly anticipated second season arrived on Netflix on August 3, and a review from The Guardian described it as "even sweeter and lovelier than before." Tune in to find out what's next for our beloved Charlie and Nick.
In this list, we look at gay and lesbian couples that ended up together, may end up together, broke up, and everything in between. Whatever the case, they all have strong supporters and a special place in many fans' hearts.
