What makes a series irresistible? A disturbing point of view can certainly help the addictive quality of a show, creating a suspenseful narrative and allowing for surprising twists. Series where murders are the stars of the show, rather than the subject (as in 'Mindhunter' or 'Luther') have a very particular allure.
Hulu's new show 'Candy' offers just that and more, starring Jessica Biel as the real-life Candy Montgomery who was at the center of a controversial court trial in Texas over the gruesome 1980 murder of Betty Gore, played by Melanie Lynskey. The true crime adaptation, which premiered May 9, is based on the book 'Evidence of Love' and depicts the events leading up to and following the ax murder. The tight five-episode arc is said to offer a more humanistic look at the two drastically different housewives' lives, in a time where women's unhappiness had little outlet.
