Censorship

The legacy of 'Friends' has only strengthened after it ended back in 2004, and it was recently re-released in China on streaming platforms Tencent, Bilibili, Sohu, iQiyi and Alibaba's Youku. But, as a well-known show, Chinese fans were quick to notice that certain scenes had been deleted, including lines that reference Ross's ex-wife who leaves him after she realizes she is a lesbian, and a scene featuring a same-sex kiss. Incorrect subtitles were also used to downplay sexual references, as the South China Morning Post reports that in one scene, the phrase "multiple orgasms" was translated to a phrase that means "women have endless gossips."

The sitcom has a massive following in China, and many millennials have credited the show with helping them learn English, so it seems a little late to the game to start censoring the show in 2022, but none of the platforms have responded publicly to the accusations, BBC reports.

But this is hardly the first popular show that's been censored around the world. Click through to find out more.
