In June 2022, Shakira announced she was separating from her partner of 11 years, Gerard Piqué, following rumors that she caught him cheating.
Shakira since addressed the breakup and spoke about how difficult it is for her and the children, but hasn't commented on the cheating accusations. However, on October 20, she released a single 'Monotonía' and its dramatic music video, which seems to reference the scandal. The song, sung in Spanish with Puerto Rican singer Ozuna, opens with the lines "It wasn’t your fault, nor was it mine / It was the monotony’s fault / I never said anything, but it hurt me / I knew this would happen." Shakira is seen sadly wandering through a grocery store eating junk food until she comes across an unseen figure, who takes out a bazooka and shoots a giant hole in her chest, leaving her bleeding heart on the floor.
In a September interview with ELLE magazine, Shakira opened up about using music as a kind of therapy to process the pain and grief she's been experiencing. "I think that music is a life raft. There have been days when I had to pick up the pieces of me from the floor. And the only way to do that, to actually do that, has been through music," she explained.
Shakira is one of the world's most popular music stars and a fashion icon to boot. She's a singer, songwriter, and dancer, and is as busy as ever as she raises her two young children.
While 2022 was a tough year for her—with the end of her relationship, her elderly father in and out of hospital, and her multimillion-dollar tax evasion case in Spain—the Queen of Latin Music is staying strong and channeling her emotions into her music. She's preparing to drop her first album since 2017, although she has said that every time she thinks her album is finished she comes up with new music to add because she's in such a creative phase. Fans can reportedly expect her next masterpiece before the end of the year.
