While celebrities may seem like they have it all together, sometimes that's only surface deep. Many of the celebs you know and love are actually suffering from rare diseases, getting treatments or finding ways to cope in addition to their already intense schedules.

Grammy-winning singer Roberta Flack has ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease, and can no longer sing, her representative said November 14. The degenerative disease, which she was diagnosed with in August, "has made it impossible to sing and not easy to speak," Flack's manager Suzanne Koga told the Associated Press. The disease eventually causes the loss of the ability to speak, eat, walk and breathe, according to The Mayo Clinic, and there is no cure yet.

Flack, most famous for hits like 'Killing Me Softly With His Song' and 'The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face' is also 85 years old, "But it will take a lot more than ALS to silence this icon," as her manager said. "Miss Flack plans to stay active in her musical and creative pursuits. Her fortitude and joyful embrace of music that lifted her from modest circumstances to the international spotlight remain vibrant and inspired." Earlier in 2022, Flack had revealed plans to tour again after surviving a 2016 stroke and a battle with COVID-19.
