While celebrities may seem like they have it all together, sometimes that's only surface deep. Many of the stars you know and love are actually suffering from rare diseases, undergoing treatment, and finding ways to cope while juggling their already intense schedules.
Legendary songstress Celine Dion broke some difficult news to her millions of fans in an Instagram video on December 8. "Recently I've been diagnosed with a very rare neurological disorder called Stiff Person Syndrome which affects something like one-in-a-million people," she explained. The rare condition is incurable and causes uncontrollable muscle spasms, making it difficult for her to walk and sing. "It's been really difficult for me to face these challenges and to talk about everything that I've been going through," the 54-year-old shared in the emotional video. Dion revealed that she will not be able to continue the European leg of her tour which was due to restart in February 2023 due to her current physical state. "I always give 100 percent when I do my show, but my condition is not allowing me to give you that right now." She broke into tears as she signed off, thanking her fans for their support while she works on her recovery and rebuilding her strength.
Unfortunately, Stiff Person Syndrome is a rare illness that isn't well understood. The muscle spasms come with an extreme sensitivity to stimuli like noise, touch, and emotional distress. Some people with the illness are unable to walk and others choose not to leave the house for fear of a loud noise or unexpected situation triggering a fit of muscle spasms. There is no cure for the disease but treatments like anti-anxiety medication and muscle relaxants can slow its progress and return some quality of life.
