The long list of UK prime ministers who resigned
Boris Johnson is far from the first

On the morning of July 7, 2022, newspapers and websites were dominated by one headline: British prime minister Boris Johnson announces his resignation. Johnson has proven to be a controversial figure for most of his time as Prime Minister since coming to power in 2019, but the near-incessant scandals that have occurred in 2022 caused a mutiny within his Conservative Party in recent days and weeks.
From "partygate" at the beginning of the year to the most recent revelation that Johnson appointed Chris Pincher as Deputy Chief Whip with full knowledge of the accusations against him alleging sexual misconduct, these events have led Johnson's own government to abandon him, leaving the now-disgraced prime minister with very few options.
Johnson's announcement did not specify an exact date of his official resignation, but instead stated that he would continue to serve "until a new leader is in place." Boris Johnson's announcement might very well prove the juiciest news of the week, but his resignation is far from unprecedented. He is only the most recent addition to the long history of British prime ministers resigning.
