Shortly after 9:30 am local time this June 22, Keir Starmer walked out of Number 10 Downing Street to make a public statement many were already awaiting: he is resigning as prime minister of the United Kingdom and leader of the Labour Party.
Visibly emotional, the prime minister thanked his wife as his "rock" and said he already spoke to King Charles to inform him of his decision.
Starmer also said he will remain in post until the Labour Party chooses a new leader, which he's asked the party's governing body to ensure happens "before Parliament returns in September."
Starmer now joins Rishi Sunak, Liz Truss, and Boris Johnson in the long list of British prime ministers who have resigned.
