Donald Glover has revealed more details about the health scare that caused him to cancel his tour last year. At the time, he only referred to it as an “ailment,” but on November 22 he told fans that a doctor later informed him he had suffered a stroke.
Glover—also known by his stage name Childish Gambino—shared the news on stage at Tyler, the Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw festival in Los Angeles. Clips of his remarks quickly spread across social media. “I had a really bad pain in my head in Louisiana, and I did the show anyway. I couldn’t really see well, so when we went to Houston, I went to the hospital, and the doctor was like, ‘You had a stroke.’” the 42-year-old said.
Strokes are the second leading cause of death and the third leading cause of disability in the world, according to the World Health Organization, but they still tend to take people by surprise. For their part, many celebrities have suffered strokes, be it an ischemic stroke where a vessel supplying blood to the brain is obstructed, or a hemorrhagic stroke where a weakened vessel ruptures and bleeds into the surrounding brain.
The brain cannot survive long at all without proper blood flow, and the effects can be long-lasting, devastating, and even fatal. Yet many stars have had strokes and lived to tell the tale.
