Matthew Perry passed away suddenly in 2023, shortly after releasing a memoir that detailed his decades-long struggle with addiction. He was found unresponsive in his pool on October 28, and it was later determined that he died "from the acute effects of ketamine with contributing factors including drowning, coronary artery disease and the effects of buprenorphine, a synthetic opioid used to treat opioid use disorder," according to NBC. It was believed that he had been clean and sober for 19 months prior to his death. Authorities launched an investigation into Matthew Perry's death in May 2024, leading to charges against five individuals, including two doctors and Perry's assistant. Three have already pleaded guilty. The DEA alleges they exploited Perry's addiction for profit, providing a deadly supply of ketamine. A woman known as "Ketamine Queen", accused of being the actor's main drug supplier, faces a minimum of 10 years in prison, while Perry's assistant could receive a 15-year sentence.
For decades, drug addiction has been the downfall of many celebrities. It is concerning how easily illicit substances can be acquired, which only exacerbates the problem. Whether intentionally or by accident, a fatal overdose is a tragic end. Unfortunately, the list of celebrities who have lost their lives to drug dependency continues to grow.
