Kobe Bryant -

Kobe Bryant was one of the greatest basketball players of all time, and his sudden and tragic death along with his 13-year-old daughter Gianna in 2020 devastated the sporting community. On February 8, 2024, an enormous statue worthy of his towering presence was unveiled in an emotional ceremony at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. The stadium is the home of the Lakers, the team Bryant spent his entire 20-year career with. The date of the unveiling carries significance for both Kobe and Gianna. Kobe wore the numbers 24 and 8 during his career, while Gianna wore the number 2 when she played, hence the date 2/8/24.

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson -

The famous Paris wax museum Musée Grévin showed off its new wax representation of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson in the fall of 2023. Unfortunately, it didn't get the reaction they were hoping for, as fans were quick to point out that the statue's skin was much lighter than Johnson's. The wrestler-turned-actor is of Samoan and Black Nova Scotian descent, and the museum was accused of "white-washing" by social media users. Johnson addressed the controversy by sharing a video in which comedian James Andre Jefferson makes fun of the statue, dragging the wax artist for "making The Rock look like David Beckham." Johnson commented, “I knew my boy @jamesjeffersonj had this Rock wax statue in his roasting crosshair.” He continued, “For the record, I’m going to have my team reach out to our friends at Grevin Museum, in Paris France so we can work at ‘updating’ my wax figure here with some important details and improvements - starting with my skin color."

Prince William and Prince Harry revealed a statue of their mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, in London on July 1, 2021. The statue by Ian Rank-Broadley, a British sculptor, was showcased in the newly designed Sunken Garden at Kensington Palace. This commemoration took place on what would have been Lady Di's 60th birthday.
