Everyone knows oats are one of the healthiest things you can eat for breakfast, as an excellent source of fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, thiamine, iron, and beta-glucan (which helps regulate blood sugar). It's also credited with lowering cholesterol and boosting the immune system. But did you know it's not just healthy for your insides?

One of oatmeal's greatest and least-known benefits is its natural ability to alleviate and protect your skin from acne. The fibrous grain acts as a gentle exfoliant, removing impurities and dead skin cells to give you clear and even-toned skin. Additionally, it absorbs the excess oil from your skin without drying it out, tightening those pores for a younger, healthier look.

If you have sensitive skin, oats also have antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties that not only prevent future breakouts, but also soothe irritation and treat inflammations. Plus, if you're dealing with something specific like sunburn or poison ivy, oatmeal can provide relief and help the skin heal. 

Making the mask can be as simple as cooking oatmeal with water, letting it cool until it's lukewarm, and applying the paste directly on your clean face. Let it sit for 20 minutes, then rinse. You can also blend the oats into a powder before mixing it with water or milk, and you can make it sweet with honey and coconut oil, or savory with sea salt and olive oil, or even freshen it up with mint and lemon—the mix-ins are endless! Just try not to eat it. 

If you're struggling with acne scars, consider mixing the oatmeal with yogurt instead of water or milk, because the high zinc content will help reduce spots and scars.

For those who already put oatmeal on their face and are looking for a new beauty hack: look no further. One of the greatest uses of oatmeal is in a long, hot bath. Pour a cup of plain oats into your tub as it starts to fill, and add a scented oil like lavender or, if you're feeling courageous, a cup of milk and a tablespoon of honey, and soak for 15-30 minutes. The oatmeal will cleanse your skin and lock in moisture, while the essential oil or milk and honey work their soothing powers from the outside in.
