On November 20, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved two new pesticides—cyclobutrifluram and isocycloseram—that belong to the per‑ and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) category. The two pesticides can now be used on vegetables such as romaine lettuce, broccoli, and potatoes.

PFAS, informally known as "forever chemicals" because of their persistence in the environment and the human body, worry scientists and watchdog groups. Indeed, little is known about their health effects, and exposure to some PFAS has been linked to various types of cancer and birth defects.

EPA spokesperson Bridget Hirsch, however, argues that "many fluorinated compounds registered or proposed for US pesticidal use in recent years offer unique benefits for farmers, users, and the public."

Nowadays, PFAS are already everywhere—from the water we drink to the food packaging we use. What’s even more concerning is that data shows that PFAS are found in the blood of up to 99% of Americans. With growing concerns over their potential health risks, including cancer and immune system issues, it’s clear that PFAS are a significant threat we can no longer ignore. Click through to learn how these chemicals spread, where they’re lurking, and what’s being done to protect public health.
