India's western state of Gujarat is in mourning after a bridge collapsed in the town of Morbi on October 30. The 750-foot (230-meter)suspension bridge hangs over a river and was built in the 19th century. It had just been reopened after renovations a week before the tragedy. There were an estimated 200 people on the bridge on Sunday evening when it suddenly collapsed into the water below. Early reports suggest that an integral cable snapped at one end of the bridge. The cars plummeted into the water and search and rescue missions recovered at least 140 dead. It is unclear how many people are still missing.
The state of Gujarat immediately launched a criminal complaint against the agency responsible for maintaining the bridge. India's prime minister, Narendra Modi, promises that the incident will be investigated and that those affected will receive compensation from the National Relief Fund. "My heart is filled with love and is with the families of those suffering," he said at a campaign event the following day.
