The world of sports is still largely considered homophobic and transphobic. It's no surprise then that very few athletes in top leagues choose to come out while playing. Fortunately, we've started to see changes in recent years.
British Olympic diver Tom Daley has earned his first ever gold medal for his performance in the men’s synchronised 10 metres platform. It's the 27-year-old's fourth time competing at the Olympics, and he believed many people had counted him out of the race. “I still honestly can’t believe what’s happening, and I honestly didn’t think I would get there in the first place, but here we are.” Daley came out in 2013 and has since become a vocal advocate for LGBT rights, particularly in the sporting world.
Of course, there are pioneers who came out long before we were even having these conversations, like tennis legends Billie Jean King and Martina Navratilova. And those who chose to come out after their careers ended are trailblazers too, pushing the conversation forward. It takes a village!
All that said, in this gallery we look at more than 70 athletes from around the world, of times past and present, who came out as LGBT.
