While many of the most valuable paintings in the world are hanging on the walls of famous museums, there are still some masterpieces on the market that are priceless. Almost. Most recently, a rare Gandhi oil portrait was sold for over US$200,000.

Indian independence leader Mahatma Gandhi led a non-violent movement against British rule and inspired similar resistance campaigns across the world. He became the subject of countless works of art, but the one just sold at auction is believed to be the only portrait he ever sat for.

The portrait was painted by British artist Clare Leighton in 1931 when Gandhi visited London. She was "one of the very few artists admitted to his office and was given the opportunity to sit with [him] on multiple occasions to sketch and paint his likeness," according to auction house Bonhams spokesperson.

If you're taken aback by such a staggering number, you're not alone. Check out this gallery to see the most expensive paintings ever sold at auction.
