As the most evolved and intelligent species on Earth, we like to think of ourselves as rational and objective beings. Sadly, this isn't always the case. Just think about how blinded your political opponents seem to be to the flaws of their ideologies and leadership. Every negative factor is explained away or justified. Now, think about your own political position, and how likely you might be to highlight the positive sides of your own ideologies and ignore the downsides.
As human beings, we seek to make sense of things, and even create narratives to understand what goes on in the world around us. Naturally, we sometimes create a narrative that suits us best. It happens in politics, religion, warfare, social issues, interpersonal issues, and seemingly insignificant moments in our everyday lives. We are all susceptible to motivated reasoning. Click through this gallery to learn more about this phenomenon and how to become a more objective person.
