Severe storms and heavy flooding have caused multiple fatalities and widespread damage in the Var region of southeastern France. Since May 19, intense rainfall has triggered flash floods across the south of the country, leaving at least three people dead and two others still missing.
The extreme weather has also brought major disruptions to daily life. At least two regional train services were halted, streets were inundated, and parts of the region experienced power and water outages.
Sadly, these extreme weather events really are becoming more frequent with climate change, though the phenomena is nothing new. History has recorded some truly terrifying floods—natural disasters that have killed thousands and destroyed homes and livelihoods.
