There's a long tradition of British royal yachts, dating back to 1660 and the reign of Charles II. During 44 years in royal service, Her Majesty's Yacht Britannia, also known as the Royal Yacht Britannia, sailed the equivalent of once round the world for each year, calling at over 600 ports in 135 countries, including the United States of America, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. Britannia was decommissioned in 1997, and has so far not been replaced. But following the recent death of Prince Philip, rumors emerged that the British government was seriously considering commissioning a new royal yacht in the prince's honor. While we wait for a final decision, it's worth looking back over the illustrious service performed by the previous royal yacht.
