Disaster

Two trains collided in eastern Slovakia this October 13, derailing an engine and a carriage and injuring at least 66 people, authorities said. No fatalities were reported.

The crash occurred near a tunnel by the village of Jablonov nad Turnou, roughly 55 km (34 miles) west of Kosice, the region’s largest city. Emergency medical services said 16 people sustained moderate to serious injuries, while at least 50 others were lightly hurt.

Train accidents, while rare today thanks to modern safety technology, have a long and often tragic history. Since the mid-19th century, brake failures, derailments, fires, and human error have caused countless deadly and dramatic crashes.
