The world's most downloaded app, over one billion videos are viewed each day on TikTok. Chances are, even if you don't actively use it, you've read or heard about one of its passing trends. And while sharing data with any app poses risks, TikTok's popularity puts it under the spotlight and begs the question: is it safe?
The US House of Representatives has its doubts. On March 13, the House voted for a bill that would essentially ban TikTok. If enacted, the legislation will demand that TikTok separate from its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, within five months, or app stores in the US will be forced to stop hosting it. It's not clear how the bill will fare in the Senate, but the House of Representatives voted 352-65 in favor. Lawmakers have expressed concerns that under China's intelligence laws, the government could force ByteDance to hand over data about US users. There are currently around 170 million TikTok users in the US, half of them under 30.
While Americans wait to see what happens to the unpopular bill, here's a rundown of the data TikTok collects about you, and how you can safeguard your privacy when using the app. Click through the gallery to learn if TikTok is truly dangerous.
