As the new social media trend of “sleepmaxxing” continues to take over TikTok, experts have a lot to say about this practice focused on improving sleep quality.

Sleepmaxxing is about going beyond the usual bedtime routine: it involves some extra steps, such as taking supplements, mouth taping, a multilayered beauty routine, and even eating two kiwis before bed! Some sleepmaxxing tips are backed by evidence, though. For example, the practices of reducing screen time and avoiding caffeine or alcohol before bed.

Experts commend the fact that more people are encouraged to take greater care of their sleep routine, yet they warn about potential risks, such as sleepmaxxing becoming a “high-pressure chore.”

“Sleepmaxxing can backfire if it turns what should be a restorative process into a high-pressure chore,” said Dr. Anita Shelgikar, director of the Sleep Medicine Fellowship and a clinical professor of neurology at the University of Michigan. “For some individuals, being overly attentive to sleep optimization and sleep patterns every night can increase stress and worsen sleep over time.”
