Several agencies are ending telework and remote work arrangements for federal employees in order to make them come back to the office on a full-time basis. The move comes shortly after President Donald Trump issued a mandate requiring federal workers return to work in person.

One such organization that has gone ahead and begun implementing the changes is the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). EPA’s Office of the Administrator sent an email to employees stating that the agency “has determined that its employees’ duties require them to be face-to-face with their supervisors, colleagues, clients, and the public to the maximum extent possible.” The EPA hopes to rescind all remote work agreements, except those that require reasonable accommodations or have special situations, such as those who are teleworking overseas or are military spouses.

EPA non-bargaining unit employees will come back to the office as early as February 24. The same date has been set for employees represented by a range of unions, such as the National Treasury Employees Union, the National Association of Government Employees, the National Association of Independent Labor, and Engineers and Scientists of California.

Indeed, countless people around the world work in hybrid or remote working models, and this includes hundreds of thousands of federal employees in the US. But on January 20, President Trump issued an executive order that requires all federal workers to return to "in-person work." This reflects the sentiment of many CEOs worldwide who, according to a recent survey, foresee the end of hybrid work models by 2027.
