A strong magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck the Drake Passage, near the Chilean Antarctic, on the night of August 21, according to local authorities. The quake’s epicenter was located 258 kilometers (160 miles) northwest of Chile’s Frei Base in the Antarctic Territory and was recorded at 10:16 pm local time.

An initial red alert was issued due to the risk of a tsunami, but the precautionary warning was later lifted. No material damage was reported, and the tsunami alert was fully canceled within hours.
