Following the announcement that US President Donald Trump did not win the Nobel Peace Prize, Norway is bracing for possible retaliation, which could include new tariffs, demands for higher NATO contributions, or even the declaration of Norway as an “enemy state.”
The remarks were made by Norwegian analyst and newspaper columnist Harald Stanghelle in an October 9 interview, prior to the announcement of Trump's loss.
Kirsti Bergstø, a leading Norwegian political figure, also stated that Norway “must be prepared for anything.”Although the Nobel Committee operates independently, it does include members of the Norwegian Parliament, as requested by Alfred Nobel. Analysts note this link could create a false idea that the prize reflects Norway’s political course and, therefore, could fuels Trump’s anger.
