The US military is preparing to activate hundreds of National Guard troops for deployment to Washington, D.C. this August 11, two officials told Reuters on August 10.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, the officials said the decision ultimately rests with President Donald Trump, but the troops are ready to be mobilized. One official noted that their exact role has not yet been determined. They could assist in protecting federal agents or handle administrative duties to free up law enforcement personnel.
This is part of President Trump’s extensive federal crackdown on crime in the nation’s capital, according to authorities. If approved, the president is expected to announce the plan during a news conference scheduled for 10 am local time this August 11.
The move would not be unprecedented. Trump has previously called in the National Guard to quell "civil unrest" during recent protests in Los Angeles, and the nation has a long history of the use of the tactic to suppress dissent.
