MOVIES Academy awards

As one of the most revered award shows in Hollywood (the industry that, after all, thrives on drama), it makes sense that the Oscars have their own history of outrageous and salacious controversies.

Controversy around the lack of diversity at the Oscars peaked in 2015, as the #OscarsSoWhite hashtag drew attention to the overwhelmingly white nominees. Now, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences are finally stepping up, and in a big way: by making inclusion a requirement to be considered for the biggest award in Hollywood.

The requirement will begin in 2024, with criteria including: underrepresented groups comprising at least 30% of the cast, commitment to paid apprenticeships and internships, and significant representation among the teams behind the scenes. The Academy's goal is to "encourage equitable representation on and off screen in order to better reflect the diversity of the movie-going audience." It's a huge move that is sure to revitalize the cinematic night.

From hilarious host gaffes to loud political statements on the red carpet, the reactions to the Academy Awards can be more entertaining than some of the films themselves. Click through to reminisce on some of the most historic moments.
