The opening of Oktoberfest in Munich was delayed on October 1 after police linked a fatal house fire and reported explosion in the city to a bomb threat at the festival grounds.
Authorities said Theresienwiese, the site of the world’s largest folk and beer festival, would remain closed until at least 5 pm local time while special forces investigated. The fire in Lerchenau, northern Munich, left one person dead, with police later confirming the blaze was likely deliberate and connected to a family dispute. Hidden explosives were also discovered inside the building and defused.
Oktoberfest runs from September 20 to October 5 and has already drawn more than 3.5 million visitors.
