The most influential American sci-fi writers
Sci-fi as we know it is a relatively recent genre, emerging through the 20th century
© Getty Images
Science fiction is a fantastical genre that deals with matters of the future. Sci-fi writers have unique imaginations that allow them to create new worlds with technology and scientific advancements beyond what exists during their lifetime, and how society would evolve around these inventions. Themes such as space travel, extraterrestrials, time travel, and parallel universes are key to this genre of speculative fiction, but there truly are no limits, as these authors have proven.
Sci-fi as we know it is a relatively recent genre, emerging through the 20th century. Many of the earliest writers to champion sci-fi were seen as oddballs, but today, we see them as visionaries.
Click through the gallery for a list of the most influential sci-fi writers to come out of the US.
