Angelina Jolie's rare Winston Churchill painting smashes auction record

The art market is often considered the realm of the intellectual and elite social circles. While celebrities may not seem to be a part of this high point of culture at first, there are many that use their money and fame to indulge in their love of the arts.
Angelina Jolie is one such star, and a gem in her collection has just made history. A rare Winston Churchill painting that the former British prime minister had gifted to US President Franklin D. Roosevelt during World War II was re-gifted from Brad Pitt to his then-partner Jolie in 2011. The couple split in 2016, and five years later the Jolie Family Collection decided to part ways with the sunset painting, called ‘Tower of Koutoubia Mosque.’
The actress put it up for auction and it quickly became the most expensive painting by Churchill to sell at auction, fetching nearly US$11.5 million after fees. It's uncertain if the value of the painting was increased by its star-studded history...
