Fans think August Alsina, Jada Pinkett Smith's former fling, came out on 'The Surreal Life'

Singer August Alsina, famously Jada Pinkett Smith's former "entanglement" opened up in the season finale of VH1's 'The Surreal Life,' in what social media might be prematurely calling a coming out. In the clip, which is the final scene of the episode, Alsina begins to talk about love.

"Love showed up, but in a new way," he says in a confessional. "I want to share that and really honor the person that I love and loves me back and is teaching me so much about love and healing. I want to do that in front of the world because it defies all of the constructs one would say love is supposed to be or love should look like." Another man then enters the frame to sit down next to him and he says, "I love you," and they hug.

Alsina has not commented further on the clip, nor has he made the identity of the man known, though people online identified him as Zu. Some social media users are referring to the cliffhanger, which is made to seem like a coming out, as a stunt for ratings. Others have claimed Zu is actually Alsina's brother and found an Instagram video of the two wishing Alsina's mother, Sheila Blair, a happy birthday, in which it seems they share a mother. If it's only a stunt, it has fooled many on Twitter who are congratulating the singer on celebrating his sexuality publicly.

With each new year of progress, the closet doors open wider and wider, and things don't seem so bleak on the outside. That's why more and more people are feeling comfortable enough to come out and claim their membership to the LGBTQ+ community—a community which has been celebrating more and more wins in terms of representation and acceptance every day.

From strengthening intersectional representation of Black and queer people, to seeing more firsts among the transgender community, to witnessing people coming to terms with a gender and sexuality not assigned to them at birth, it's really a wonderful time to be alive. Of course, there is still a ways to go before we can start to celebrate true equality, but that's why it's so important when famous faces have the courage to come out and be examples for others, and hopefully advocates as well.
