A newly surfaced demo of Zac Efron singing ‘Get’cha Head in the Game’ from the original ‘High School Musical’ (2006) has fans buzzing—and not in a good way. Posted on X nearly two decades after the film’s release, the clip reveals Efron’s poor vocals from a 2005 recording session, sparking a wave of criticism online.

Though Efron starred as Troy Bolton in the Disney Channel hit, it was Drew Seeley’s voice that ultimately made it to the final cut, a decision director Kenny Ortega attributed to the songs being written before Efron was cast.

While some fans defended Efron’s growth as a performer, others were less forgiving, calling the demo “a mess” and thanking Seeley for saving their childhood soundtrack. Seeley, who auditioned for the role but lost out to Efron, has since expressed support for the casting choice, citing his age gap with co-star Vanessa Hudgens. Efron went on to sing in ‘High School Musical 2’ and ‘High School Musical 3’ (released in 2007 and 2008, respectively), and ‘Hairspray’ (2007), clearly proving his vocal chops in later projects.

In Hollywood, versatility is the ultimate currency—and those who master acting, singing, and dancing often rise above the rest. As Zac Efron’s journey shows, vocal chops can make or break a breakout moment.

In this gallery, you'll find artists who are true triple threats in the world of entertainment—stars who can sing and dance just as effortlessly as they can act.
