Memory sometimes fails us. Indeed, no one's memory is absolutely 100% reliable. But there are people who believe their memory is entirely accurate, only to find out later that key details never actually happened. Scientists call this confabulation.
Confabulation is a neuropsychiatric condition and a type of memory error. It describes a memory disturbance in which a person generates false memories without any intention to lie or deceive.
Some brain conditions cause these memory gaps, disorders that include dementia and traumatic brain injury. But there are several other potential underlying causes as to why a person may confabulate.
In this gallery, we explore in more detail the key characteristics of confabulation, discuss signs and symptoms, and look at whether or not the condition can be treated or managed. Click on to continue reading.
