US health officials are investigating a multistate outbreak of Cyclospora, a parasite that has sickened at least 145 people across 17 states and hospitalized 20.
The infection is linked to contaminated fresh produce, including leafy greens, herbs, berries, and other fruits and vegetables eaten raw.
Symptoms include prolonged diarrhea, nausea, fatigue, and stomach cramps. The CDC advises anyone experiencing diarrhea accompanied by fever, dehydration, or persistent symptoms to seek medical care. Thoroughly washing produce can help reduce risk, while cooking food at high temperatures destroys the parasite and helps prevent infection.
The Cyclospora outbreak is a reminder that parasites can pose a serious health risk, even in developed countries. These organisms derive nourishment and protection from other living beings and can cause a wide range of diseases in humans. While parasitic illnesses are more common in some parts of the world, anyone can be exposed through contaminated food, water, soil, or insect bites.
