Chris Johnson has revealed that he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) last year at the age of 39. Speaking to Michael Strahan for an episode of 'Good Morning America' that aired on June 29, the former NFL running back said doctors believe he has sporadic ALS, the most common form of the disease, despite having no family history of the condition.
Johnson, a three-time Pro Bowl selection who was drafted by the Tennessee Titans in 2008, said he first noticed weakness in his right hand. “It can happen to someone who never expected it,” he said, recalling how the subtle loss of grip strength eventually led to his diagnosis.
ALS is a degenerative disease that causes individuals to lose the use of their limbs gradually, and it has no cure. The condition became known worldwide thanks to a famous sufferer, the late British scientist Stephen Hawking, and has recently come under the spotlight with the premature death of actor Eric Dane.
