History

The Black Codes were a series of discriminatory laws introduced by the former Confederate states during the early years of Reconstruction, following the American Civil War. Although slavery had been abolished, these measures were implemented to restrict the rights and freedoms of African Americans. The Black Codes kick-started decades of racial segregation, which later developed into the Jim Crow laws.
