Police officers have been slapping handcuffs on criminals since the 17th century. In those days, cuffs were not much more than simple restraints, designed primarily for long-term confinement.

The shift to modern handcuffs began in the mid-19th century, driven by the need for enhanced security and order. Specialized industrial engineers and designers on both sides of the Atlantic pioneered their use in law enforcement and in a military capacity. By the 20th century, handcuffs were in use worldwide to prevent suspected and convicted criminals from escaping from police custody.
