At least 164 people have died and hundreds have been injured after Venezuela’s strongest earthquake in over 100 years, preceded by only a slightly smaller one 40 seconds earlier.

A 7.5-magnitude quake hit the country’s northern coast after a 7.2-magnitude foreshock, that could be felt as far away as Bogotá, Colombia. The earthquakes hit at 6:04 pm local time on June 24, during a national holiday in Venezuela when many people were at home.

The shaking destroyed homes in Caracas, caused widespread damage across the region, and left hundreds of emergency workers searching through rubble to rescue survivors. Apart from the 164 individuals confirmed dead, some 970 are reported injured.

Every year, thousands of tiny tremors are recorded all over the planet, some of which are so small that they go unnoticed. However, some earthquakes are remembered throughout history for their unparalleled destruction and devastation. Click through this gallery to read up on them.
