Born in 1953, the "WD" stands for water-displacing [spray], while the "40" indicates the number of trials necessary to manufacture the formula in the lab. Due to its solvent, lubricant , and degreasing properties, WD-40 can be used for a wide variety of things. The formula remains a trade secret to this day, but it's no secret that it works!
