A 28-year-old Army supply sergeant opened fire on his colleagues at Fort Stewart, Georgia, on August 6, injuring five soldiers before being tackled and arrested. Officials identified the shooter as Sgt. Quornelius Radford, who used a personal handgun in the attack.
The incident took place at the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team complex at around 11 am, triggering a base lockdown. Three of the injured underwent surgery, but all are expected to recover.
Brig. Gen. John Lubas praised the quick action of soldiers who restrained Radford, saying they “prevented further casualties or wounded.” A motive for the shooting has not yet been confirmed.
Radford, who enlisted in 2018 and has not been deployed, was facing an upcoming court hearing for a DUI charge in May. The FBI is assisting with the investigation.
Mass shootings remain a painful and recurring part of American history. Despite decades of debate, the lack of comprehensive gun control legislation means such tragedies continue to occur. Carried out increasingly by young men who also often suffer from serious mental health or substance abuse problems, these attacks continue to plague the country.
