At least five children were injured in a shooting on August 27 during the first week of classes at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis, authorities and a local hospital said. The school was evacuated, and families were directed to a reunification zone on campus after the shooter was “contained,” with city officials confirming there was no longer an active threat.
Children’s Minnesota, a pediatric trauma hospital, said it treated the five children. Local, state, county, and federal law enforcement officers responded to the scene. President Donald Trump said on Truth Social that he had been briefed on the “tragic shooting” and that the White House would continue monitoring the situation.
Mass shootings remain a painful and recurring part of American history. Despite decades of debate, a lack of comprehensive gun control legislation means such tragedies continue to occur. Carried out increasingly by young men who also often suffer from serious mental health or substance abuse problems, these attacks continue to plague the country.
