Health officials are sounding the alarm after a Salmonella outbreak tied to eggs left 95 people sick across the United States, as reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on August 28. The majority of cases—73—were reported in California, though illnesses have also surfaced in 13 other states, from Florida to New York.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) confirmed that California-based Country Eggs LLC issued a recall of its large brown cage-free sunshine yolk eggs on August 28. The products were distributed to grocery stores and food service distributors in California and Nevada between June 16 and July 9, with sell-by dates from July 1 to September 16, and the code “CA-7695” printed on cartons.

The CDC said 18 people have been hospitalized, though no deaths have been reported. Officials warn that Salmonella can cause severe illness, especially in young children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems. Investigations into the outbreak remain ongoing.

A recall is a request from a manufacturer to return a product after the discovery of safety issues or defects that could put consumers at risk. While such measures are common—cars, for example, have been pulled from the market since as early as 1973—the scale of outbreaks like this one highlights the importance of swift action and public awareness.
