Conflict

Israel struck the Nasser hospital in southern Gaza on August 25, killing at least 20 people, including five journalists working for Reuters, the Associated Press, Al Jazeera, and other outlets, Reuters reported. The attack sparked immediate condemnation from the Palestinian presidency, which urged the United Nations to protect journalists and hold Israel accountable.

Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office described the strike as a “tragic mishap,” stressing that Israel’s war was with Hamas and that it valued the work of journalists and medical staff. The Israel Defense Forces confirmed it had targeted the area near the hospital and announced an inquiry, saying it “regrets any harm to uninvolved individuals” and does not intentionally target journalists. However, six more journalists were killed in an Israeli strike less than two weeks earlier, and the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) reports that over 190 journalists have been killed since October 2023.

Hours following Hamas’ attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, Israel began airstrikes on the Gaza Strip. Just 20 days later, Israel commenced its destructive ground invasion.

The conflict that has escalated into one of the worst humanitarian crises in history, with more than 1,700 people killed by Hamas, while Israel’s military response has resulted in over 55,000 Palestinian deaths.
