President Donald Trump has petitioned the Supreme Court to support a policy enabling the US to deport migrants to third-party countries—including unstable regions like South Sudan—without advance notice or the chance to claim fear of persecution.
According to CNN, the Trump administration argues this will address challenges in removing undocumented immigrants, particularly those considered difficult to deport under existing procedures. Critics, however, highlight recent efforts to transfer detainees to war-torn South Sudan as dangerously reckless.
A federal judge previously blocked the policy, stating that it violated basic legal protections by denying migrants the opportunity to contest such transfers. The court also found the administration “unquestionably” ignored that order in attempting deportations.
With immigration remaining a central issue of Trump’s agenda, many are wondering what impact these measures will have on the US and beyond. To find out more, click through this gallery.
