Two people were killed, and at least 22 were injured, after a car drove into a crowd in Leipzig, Germany, on May 4, authorities said. The incident took place in the busy Grimmaische Straße area, where the vehicle struck pedestrians before fleeing the scene.

Police later arrested a 33-year-old German suspect, with officials saying there is currently no evidence of a political or religious motive. Local prosecutors confirmed they are investigating the case as murder and attempted murder, and authorities believe the attack was carried out by a lone perpetrator.

Officials said three victims remain in serious condition, while the two fatalities—a 63-year-old woman and a 77-year-old man—were both German citizens. Saxony state leader Michael Kretschmer noted the suspect had a history of mental illness, as investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the attack.
