The Joker and more on-screen Batman villains
Lady Gaga confirmed to star opposite Joaquin Phoenix in upcoming sequel 'Joker: Folie à Deux'
© BrunoPress/Getty Images
The Batman franchise has numerous unique, exciting, and bizarre villains. Many have been portrayed on-screen by multiple actors, taking on completely different styles depending on the director. For example, Danny DeVito's performance as Penguin in Tim Burton's 'Batman Returns' (1992) is very different to Colin Farrell's Penguin in the 2022 reboot!
Joaquin Phoenix's take on the Joker is also vastly different from that of Heath Ledger's or Jared Leto's, but we're soon going to be treated to more of the Oscar-winning psychodramatic take on the villain. Director Todd Phillips confirmed the sequel to the 2019 film on Instagram on June 7, with a photo of the cover of the script, written by Phillips and Scott Silver, which has the title 'Joker: Folie à Deux.' It has since been confirmed that Lady Gaga will star alongside Phoenix in the sequel, which is set to be a musical! The phrase folie à deux refers to a delusion or mental illness shared by two people. Fans are speculating that Lady Gaga will play the role of Harley Quinn in the upcoming movie, as she is one of Joker's only companions in the Batman universe, and is just as unhinged as he is. The teaser released on social media featured the song 'Cheek to Cheek,' which Gaga famously covered with Tony Bennett. It also confirmed that the film will be released on October 4, 2024.
While we wait for Todd Phillips to complete his next masterpiece, let's look back at some other memorable performances of infamous Batman villains. Click through the gallery to get started.
